Day By Day Itinerary

Trek through ancient Bedouin migration routes and interesting shepherds and hunters' trails. Stunning and diverse landscapes ending in Petra.

The desert towards Petra is awe inspiring in its beauty and extraordinary moon like landscape.

It is a region filled with history, battles and revolutions reaching back as far as the old testament when Solomon and Aaron passed through in their search for the promised land.

Day 1 : Welcome to Jordan.

Fly to Amman. Transfer for overnight hotel in Amman

Overnight Standard hotel.

Day 2 : Amman – Mount Nebo - Dead Sea –8 km / 2 - 3 hours approx

We start today with a transfer to Mount Nebo. This is the most revered holy place in Jordan where tradition has it that God showed Moses the Promised Land into which he was never destined to enter.  On a clear day there is a breathtaking view across the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea, to the domes and spires of Jerusalem and Bethlehem.  We will have time here to visit the Moses Memorial Church and the mosaics. From here we get back on the coach for our short transfer to the start of the trek.  We follow a narrow wadi (dry river-bed), up to a hill point, where we have our first stunning views over the Jordanian desert. Our trek continues further up the wadi, along a ridge to another beautiful view point. We then make our way down towards the Dead Sea, following the trail of the Wadi as go and trekking through some Bedouin settlements. Our buses will be waiting for us when we reach the gravel road for the short transfer to the Dead beach  where we will have lunch together. After lunch we have the chance to “swim” in the Dead Sea,   Check in at hotel , free time followed by Dinner and O/N dead Sea .

Overnight Basic Camping. Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3 : Feinan ruins – Tlalat Al Sufer 25 – 30 km / 7 - 8 hours approx.

After breakfast at the Dead Sea transfer to Wadi Finan . then  we start the hike from the ruins, cutting through the small wadis and over small ridges, keeping the Edom Mountains on one side of us. We have a long trek this morning to lunch (about 15km) and we will have donkeys with us to carry water. We stop for lunch at Wadi Um Sakakin. Time permitting we will walk through the wadi to the water source and to a small waterfall before heading to the campsite at Tlalat Al  Sufer. The terrain today is mainly flat, but it will be stony underfoot and there will be very little shade so be prepared for a challenging day. We camp tonight in a beautiful spot next to the dunes. Camping .

Overnight Basic Camping. Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4 : Wadi Arava – Beer Madkour 20 km / 6-7 hours approx.

After breakfast we start our trek heading south along the Camel & donkeys track from the campsite to Alfarsh . Today our terrain is mostly uphill, with some minor undulations in places. We soon reach the hiking trail which we follow all the way to our lunch stop. We stop for lunch after about 13km and then continue on to Ras Sulaiman Overlooking the Araba . Here we will have time to learn more about the Bedouin way of life. Our trek continues from here over the Camel track and through an area with a few acacia trees, until we reach a wide Wadi area with lots of small terraces, our camp for the night.

Overnight Basic Camping. Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5 : Jebal Qaroun – Slasel – Little Petra 20 - 24km / 8 hours approx.

We continue this morning hiking along the Camel & donkeys track. The terrain becomes more undulating, but the scenery is really beautiful. We will be able to enjoy views over the Petra Mountains, including Jabal Haroun. Prophet Aaron, brother of Moses and Miriam, died in the Petra area and was buried on Mount Hor, now known as Jabal Haroun (Mount Aaron). After 5km, we leave the camel track and follow the trek of Nakev Sleisel. We have a hike of about 2 hours which will take us to the summit at 1023m. From here we trek down and up again until we reach Mount Quaran, part of the Red Mountains Ridge with beautiful views over the Araba valley. Here we will stop for lunch. After lunch we trek through the Wadi to Baidah (Little Petra), one of the caravan stations from Nabatean times. We will tour the old caves and temples before continuing to our overnight campsite just outside Little Petra, Ras Suleman.  Camping .

Day 6 : Little Petra – Petra 16km / 8 hours approx.

Our last day, and what a magnificent one it is. We trek from our campsite on relatively flat terrain towards the famous Red Rose City of Petra. Built more than 2000 years ago it stretches over several kilometres. Petra was the strategic centre for the old silk and spice routes. It prospered for many centuries with a population of about 25,000 at the height of its power, before its decline during the expansion of the Roman Empire. It was rediscovered in 1812 by the Anglo-Swiss explorer John Lewis Burchart. The Nabateans built Petra on a terrace pierced from east to west by Wadi Musa (Moses) one of the places where tradition has it that Moses struck a rock and ‘water gushed forth’. The valley is enclosed by sandstone cliffs veined with shades of red, purple and pink, out of which the city’s monuments and temples were hewn. On arrival at the site (after about 2 hours trekking) we climb up to the Monastery. It is Petra’s most awe-inspiring monument and is also one of the most challenging to reach. There are well-worn steps that lead up to it and the climb takes about an hour. The incredible views from the top over the entire Petra basin and Wadi Araba make the exertion worthwhile. We then re-trace our steps back to the site for a guided visit (3 hours approx.) of this amazing site .Tonight we will stay for overnight in Wadi Mousa.  Hotel.
Overnight Basic Camping. Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 7 : Drive to Wadi Rum

We spend today experiencing the beautiful area of Wadi Rum. We head off south for an exciting full day trekking, seeing natural rock bridges and viewing incredible rock sculptures on the way to our overnight camp. During the afternoon you may take an optional camel trek through the dramatic Siq al Barrah. We ride or walk for approx 2 and 1/2 hours through a landscape of sandstone mountains and white and pink coloured sands. The desert is another world, inhabited by the nomadic Bedouin peoples for generations. Before our night under the starry sky, we may be lucky enough to witness a spectacular desert sunset. We sleep in a single, large, traditional goat hair tent (the best protection against typical desert extremes of hot and cold) which is laid out with rugs, mattresses, pillows and sleeping bags. The evening is normally spent around a campfire, with spectacular desert stars overhead: Limited washing facilities and WC are available close by. Overnight in Bedouin style tent.
Overnight Basic Camping. Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Useful Tips

As with any expedition into a desert area, trekkers should always be well-equipped. It is easy to get lost in this maze of mountains and desert, so it’s better to follow your guide. Always carry a map of the area and a compass, as well as plenty of water, sunblock and a hat.
